I first heard Baz Luhrmann's 1999 hit, "Wear Sunscreen" when I moved to Australia.
A friend had recorded an MP3 disc (do you remember those) of songs to keep me from feeling home sick.
I assumed the cheesy lyrics were written by Baz himself, but was surprised to learn that these poignant words were those of a Chicago columnist Mary Schmich, you can read her original column here.
Initially the song didn't do much for me... as a 20 odd year old I was always looking for a beat... to move my body... but the more I listened to it the more the hidden messages were revealed, and even know... 20 years on I still am reminder of something I have let slip by.
Today I find this as one of the most empowering songs I can play for my kids... of course I don't tell them I am playing it for them (and for me a bit too)... but the lyrics cannot not affect you and strike just a single chord.
Of course the most powerful message in the song is by far “Do one thing every day that scares you”.
I think of it daily and even have it written on my boy's bathroom mirror as a reminder....
I remind my kids, clients and myself of the power of doing the scary stuff.... because it really is only the scary stuff that puts you on the path to growth... even if you fail... and perhaps especially if you fail.... it is then you learn what not to do.. and grow and bloom

Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past
From the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts
And recycling it for more than it's worth
But trust me on the sunscreen
