Has your Christmas cheer gone MIA?

It’s easily done, especially when you consider how much we’re expected to do over the holidays and how many others’ needs we’re expected to prioritise.

This Christmas, I have a challenge for you: make yourself a priority.

The festive season should be about joy, togetherness, and celebration. Yet, for many, it becomes one of the most stressful times of the year.

Endless to-do lists, social obligations, and the pressure to make everything perfect can strip away the enjoyment, leaving you as burned out as during your busiest workdays.

But what if this year, you approached the holidays differently?

By putting your own oxygen mask on first—prioritising your health and well-being—you can navigate the season with more energy, less stress, and greater fulfilment. Here are five simple strategies to help you maintain balance and optimise your performance this Christmas.

1. Schedule "Me Time" as a Non-Negotiable

In the whirlwind of holiday preparations, it’s easy to lose yourself in the needs of others. That’s why scheduling time for yourself is crucial. Whether it’s 15 minutes in the morning for a peaceful coffee, a lunchtime walk, or an evening journaling session, carve out time for activities that recharge you.

Why it works: Protecting personal time reduces stress by giving your mind space to pause and reset, building resilience for the day’s demands.

2. Incorporate Daily Movement to Elevate Energy

Exercise doesn’t have to mean hours at the gym—it can be as simple as stretching, a brisk walk, or even dancing to your favourite holiday songs. Movement releases endorphins, your body’s natural stress relievers, and helps maintain energy levels throughout the day.

Why it works: Physical activity boosts your mood, sharpens cognitive performance, and counteracts holiday stress.

3. Set and Honour Boundaries

It’s tempting to say yes to every invitation and request, but overcommitting often leads to exhaustion and resentment. Take a step back and assess what truly matters to you. Politely decline or delegate tasks that don’t align with your priorities.

Why it works: Setting boundaries conserves your mental and emotional energy, allowing you to focus on what brings you joy.

4. Nourish Your Body with Purpose

While festive treats are part of the season, remember to fuel your body with nutritious meals. Incorporate plenty of greens, lean proteins, and healthy fats to sustain energy and focus. Stay hydrated too—dehydration can exacerbate feelings of fatigue and stress.

Why it works: Balanced nutrition stabilises blood sugar levels, reduces mood swings, and helps combat the physical effects of stress.

5. Reflect and Recharge Each Evening

End your day with a moment of mindfulness, I know it sounds boring but don't knock it till you have tried it.

Reflect on what went well, express gratitude, and engage in a calming activity like reading, meditating, or soaking in a warm bath. This routine signals your body to wind down, improving sleep quality.

Why it works: Quality rest is essential for managing stress and sustaining peak performance, especially during busy periods.

Performance and stress management go hand in hand. When stress levels rise, your ability to perform—whether at work, home, or during celebrations—diminishes. Prioritising self-care keeps your physical, mental, and emotional reserves topped up, empowering you to show up as your best self.

By adopting these five strategies, you’re not only setting yourself up for a more enjoyable Christmas but also building habits that enhance your performance year-round.

This Christmas, What is You Prioritised You?

The holiday season doesn’t have to be a source of stress. By making small, intentional changes to prioritise yourself, you can embrace the festivities with calm and confidence. Remember, putting your oxygen mask on first isn’t selfish—it’s essential for creating a meaningful and joyful holiday for both yourself and those around you.
